With SmartBird, Festo has succeeded in deciphering the flight of bird – one of the oldest dreams of humankind. Inspired by herring gull, SmartBird can start, fly and land autonomously – with no additional drive mechanism. This is made possible by an active articulated torsional drive unit in combination with a complex control system attains an unprecedented level of efficiency in flight operation. By analyzing SmatBird’s fly characteristics, Festo has acquired additional knowledge to optimize its products and solutions in an even more energy efficient manner.

Festo Bionic Learning Network
Established in 1925, Festo is a worldwide leader in the field of automation technology and the global market leader for technical training and continuing vocational education. The independent family-owned company is headquartered in Esslingen, Germany.
Festo has been working intensively on the topic of bionics since early 1990s, believing nothing is as efficient as nature: biological evolution can be described as an optimisation strategy for the adaptation of organisms to their environment. In 2006, the Bionic Learning Network, an association of renowned universities, institutes and development companies, was launched, with the aim to transfer natural efficiency principles to automation technologies and manufacturing processes and to develop energy-efficient bio-mechatronic products. Herring gull, elephant trunk or the pads of a gecko can all serve as the inspiration.
Today, with the aid of bionics the Bionic Learning Network serves as a platform in addition to the R&D activities of Festo to develop and optimize new technologies in automation.
