在画流程图，站点结构，内容地图，物质结构图等等图的时候，常常要用到虚线，但有时候，还是会在使用虚线还是其他颜色粗细的实线而犹豫。到底虚线在什么情况下使用比较合适了。最近看了一篇文章，很受用。
作者夸赞虚线是一个神奇而简单的视觉元素，有时候可以把3，4维度的事物用2维展现出来。
It has a clear and simple visual magic, the ability to express something three- or four-dimensional in two dimensions.
根据作者15年的信息设计工作的积累，虚线有如下的使用方法：
·几何中的解释隐藏部分的关系(The dashed line as hidden geometry)
·用虚线来表示运动或移动（The dashed line as movement）
·虚线作为一种路径轨迹（The dashed line as paths）
和表达运动或移动（movement）有些类似，但是它本身可以作为一种路径或途径的表达方式:
还有个例子比如RFID工业应用物流管理的图（by Xplane）:
Colin Ware定义虚线，点线，波浪线是一种链接线（ linking lines）:
“A linking line between entities represents some kind of relationship between them. A line linking closed contours can have different colours or other graphical qualities such as waviness, and this effectively represents an attribute or type of relationship.”
·虚线表示一种预料(The dashed line as expectation)
虚线似乎和英文的省略号一样？我知道Windows中后面带了…的命令，表示会激活新的对话框。
·虚线表示一种短暂的物质（The dashed line as ephemeral material）
上图中淋浴头出来的水流，水气都是短暂的事物。
·虚线表示边框或者接缝（The dashed line as border or seams）

Edward Tufte的The Visual Display of Quantitative Information一书中的例子。折线采用的不是一整条实线，而是短实线加点连接（构成虚线）。
